About BSU Mandiri

BSU Mandiri (Bank Sampah Unit Mandiri) is a community-based circular waste management initiative operating in Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia.

Through an integrated household waste recovery model, we work with more than 500 households across 10 neighborhood clusters to transform everyday waste into measurable environmental outcomes, community savings, and local circular economic value.

Our model combines waste collection, digital transaction tracking, organic resource recovery, and community education within a single neighborhood-scale implementation system.

Our Story

BSU Mandiri began with a simple challenge: valuable household materials were being discarded without any system to recover their economic or environmental value.

We built a practical community-based solution.

Households sort waste at source, deposit recoverable materials through our collection system, and receive digitally recorded savings credits in return. These savings can be accessed by participants to support household needs such as education, groceries, and daily expenses.

As the program evolved, we expanded beyond inorganic waste recovery.

Today, our operational model includes three organic processing pathways, Black Soldier Fly cultivation, aerobic composting, and compost wells, allowing us to address a broader portion of the household waste stream through a locally managed circular system.

BSU Mandiri continues to develop as a digitally tracked, community-scale implementation model designed for measurable replication.

What We Do

Waste Savings Program

Residents deposit sorted inorganic waste and receive digitally recorded savings credits through our structured community collection system.

Organic Waste Recovery

Food and green waste are processed through three complementary methods: Black Soldier Fly cultivation, aerobic compost bins, and in-ground compost wells.

Environmental Education

Regular learning sessions build long-term waste segregation habits and strengthen community awareness around circular resource use.

Digital Impact Tracking

Every deposit, transaction, and kilogram is digitally recorded to support transparency, reporting integrity, and partner accountability.

Recycling Network Integration

Recovered inorganic materials are transferred to verified downstream recycling buyers, maximizing diversion from open dumping and landfill pathways.

Our Values

Transparency

All waste-flow and contribution records are systematically documented and available for partner review through structured reporting.

Community-Centered Impact

Economic and environmental value generated through the system remains embedded within the local community.

Accountability

We operate through clear operational roles, documented processes, and measurable reporting commitments to partners and stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement

From inorganic waste savings to integrated organic recovery and digital systems, BSU Mandiri is designed to evolve through iterative operational development.
